Boutique Hotel
For now, there is no truly impressive hotel we can full-heartedly back in Verona. For romance lovers, however, it doesn't get better than Il Sogno di Giulietta. A romance-theme boutique hotel, the property faces the famous courtyard where Romeo is said to have professed his love of Juliet. With a name that mean's 'Juliet's dream' in Italian, a medieval entrance along a cobblestone courtyard leads to modest lobby with counter-style reception and soundtrack of moody classical music in the background. Lacking a proper restaurant, the staff of the hotel does its best to facilitate easy access to the town's best eateries as well as orchestrating on the fly cocktail service in-room or in a cozy corner of the lobby. Guests of the hotel should be forewarned, especially during high season, that the property is accessed through the hordes of visitors in the main courtyard of the famous Juliet balcony that's like the whaling wall of romance.
The Room
Think Juliet on her wedding night with a bearable dose of Italian kitsch; rooms at Il Sogno are captured along separate floors with the higher locations providing better views of the famous courtyard and less noise from the masses that pursue the landmark location throughout the year. A period building more magical than expected contains rooms with rafter ceiling and crisp hardwood floor. Décor includes an often too ornate scene of carved wood furnishings, oriental rugs and tapestries next to ridiculously grand fireplace mantles, picture windows and terraces. Bathrooms are thoroughly modern spaces with spa-style fiberglass tubs that lack the charm of the building’s historical elements.
